Concert: David Harvey’s Guitar Recital
We welcome back outstanding guitarist David Harvey for this fascinating 1-hour programme of French and German Baroque music for solo guitar. The composers featured in this programme are:
Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre – one of the few well-known public female composers and performers of her time, part of the Court of Louis XIV (The Sun King). She excelled as a harpsichordist, and loved to improvise. Her sense of musical freedom is infectious!
Silvius Leopold Weiss – famous for his ‘Fantasie’ for guitar.
Francois Couperin – his Mysterious Barricades (after which this recital is named). In the view of Tom Service, “The four parts create an ever-changing tapestry of melody and harmony, interacting and overlapping with different rhythmic schemes and melodies. The effect is shimmering, kaleidoscopic and seductive, a sonic trompe l’oeil that seem to have presaged images of fractal mathematics, centuries before they existed.”
J.S. Bach – whose lute sonata BWV 998 transfers excellently to the guitar and forms the final piece of this fascinating programme.
