St Mary-at-Finchley is an Anglican church committed to equal opportunities and is a member of Inclusive Church.
St Mary’s has a strong tradition of choral and congregational singing within the Anglican tradition and enjoys a wide range of church music based on hymns, songs, the mass setting and a different anthem each week. St Mary-at-Finchley Choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music.
The Director of Music is Alison Smart Fisher.
With weekly rehearsals on Thursday evenings 8-9.30pm the adult choir is a welcoming, supportive and vibrant group of volunteers who pray together and sing together, and enjoy singing in 4-part harmony. On Sundays we sing at the 10am service each week, with a wide range of music from renaissance to modern. We occasionally also sing choral evensong, give a concert or visit another church/synagogue.
We visit a local Residential Care home to sing services 3 times a year. Some of the adults are working on their Voice For Life badges through the scheme structured by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) to which the church is affiliated. The Director of Music Alison Smart Fisher is happy to chat to anyone interested in joining the choir – catch her after the 10am service any Sunday morning!
Open to children aged 7+ who enjoy singing, this is a lovely inclusive group led by Alison Smart Fisher (Director of Music), with Penny Davison (Administrator) and Margaret Poston (Pianist). We rehearse every Thursday 6.45-7.30pm (with some additional one-to-one sessions to support learning through the Voice for Life Scheme) and sing in church once a month. We learn to sing, as well as to read music, and to understand the liturgy. We also sing the Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall each year which is very exciting, and sing for the Holocaust Memorial Service each year.
Choir outings include trips to the Hollywood Bowl, concerts etc. If you’d like your son or daughter to join the Youth Choir please contact Penny Davison via the church office.
St Mary’s is a musical church with a long-running series of chamber music concerts, curated by Alison Smart Fisher. Admission is free with retiring collection. Please see ‘Events’ or ‘Music News’ for details of upcoming concerts.
